Recently, two scientists, Theodore Pietsch from the University of Washington and James Orr from NOAA Fisheries Alaska Fisheries Science Center compiled the most comprehensive list to date of fish species known to inhabit the Salish Sea.
Located near British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State (USA), the Salish Sea is a 6,533 square mile inland sea that encompasses Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan De Fuca, and the Strait of Georgia.
Newly identified species include California tonguefish, Pacific hagfish, opah, Pacific viperfish, leopard shark, queenfish, smallhead eelpout and the halfbanded rockfish. Scientists also added several species of lampreys, snailfish, skates, sole, sturgeon, poacher, sculpin, prickleback, snailfish, eelpout, flashlightfish.
